Miracle Max: [waving goodbye to the heroes] Have fun stormin' da castle.
Valerie: [to Max] Think it'll work?
Miracle Max: It would take a miracle.
(from The Princess Bride)
Today’s walk was nothing extraordinary or spectacular. But, at the same time, it wasn’t a bad walk. We are still in a semi mountainous area and have evidently returned to another wine region with many vineyards.
The highlights of the day came early on as we walked through the city of Ponferrada. It seemed to have a very nice charm about it….
and is steeped in the history of the Knights Templer,
which includes the main church of Santa Maria de Encina (Our Lady of the Oak Tree)…
… and a castle.
We spent a good amount of time exploring the castle, or as I liked to say, storming the castle.
I have to admit I kind of felt like a kid walking around the castle and imagining what it would have been like to be there.
It might have helped that the chicken (Dotora Gallina) was also there!
One thing the Camino seems to be reminding me is that we have to sometimes forget all the “stuff” we have and just find simple pleasure in what’s before us, finding the wonder and enjoyment that is right there in front of us, becoming child-like again. Maybe this is one of the things Jesus meant when he said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” At any rate, it was fun roaming around and exploring and “storming” the castle in Ponferrada.
It also helps that we have less than 200km (about 125 miles) to go!
Buen Camino!
