Just what we all needed:some rest.
We decided to take a “rest day” today in Burgos. We all slept in and didn’t do any Camino walking, just some walking to explore the city.
We started by walking through Arco de Santa Maria….
…which led us to the Cathedral. It is an expansive complex of medieval origin with many individual chapels, a plethora of artwork and just beauty all around.
There’s also the “Papamosca” which is an animated figure that chimes the time inside the church.
I then headed to the church of San Nicola di Barí. It is famous for its alterpiece which is quite impressive.
Next, I climbed to the top of the city to see the “Castillo”. Started in the 9th century, it was a castle that offered protection for the young city. It is pretty much in ruins now but offers extraordinary views of the contemporary city.
After a nap (after all, it’s a rest day) and some ice cream, we went to the Museum of Human Evolution. Close to here (actually in the last city that we stayed in Atapuerca) there has been discovered remains of early settlements of our human ancestors. The museum showcases some of the archeological finds. Pretty cool!
Tomorrow, we begin to walk again!
Buen Camino!
