And the winner for the ugliest section of the Camino goes to ….. this one!
The morning started out just fine as we walked through Leon, a city that was starting to come to life. Folks were headed to work. Kids were walking to school. Coffees were being made in the cafés.
As we walked out of the city, we passed by the church of Saint Isidore….
…. a store called Indiana Bill….
…. the Parador Hotel where the pilgrims in the movie “The Way” stop one evening….
…. andeven some abandoned bodegas (which are built into the hillside to store wine and food.)
The little town of La Virgen del Camino was cute. The church in town was interesting in that it is quite modern but still has the Baroque alterpiece. I believe Mary appeared to a pastor here back in the 1500s.
Then, the Camino spent most of the way along a roadside. To one side there was pretty much scrubby fields, and on the other side was a highway with quite a bit of traffic. Not the most beautiful sites we have seen along the Camino, and not many good places to stop. At one point, we were sitting outside a truckstop simply because they have benches available. These pictures pretty much sum up what we saw for quite a long stretch. (in the Camino‘s defense, there was an alternate route. However, it would have given us A short day today and then quite a long day tomorrow and we chose to have two medium length ays instead.)
It did eventually give way to a little better scenery. It was relatively flat. The weather was cool. And it brought us to our albergue which was very comfortable, and where I had a very tasty dessert of yogurt and caramel apple sauce.
And, there were a few other fun things along the way. So, I guess today wasn’t all that bad.
Buen Camino!
